NEL-i Announces Constructed Wetland Carbon Partnership With Rplace

The climate consultancy joins forces with MRV experts to develop enhanced constructed wetlands with carbon finance

Montreal, September 7, 2023 Rplace, a developer of constructed wetland-focused MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) platforms, and NEL-i, a climate consultancy, are collaborating to implement nature-based wastewater treatment solutions.

Constructed wetlands offer numerous interconnected benefits, including groundwater recharge, flood prevention, habitat creation, and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The MRV technology used to quantify environmental benefits will also ensure optimal management and maintenance of the constructed wetland ecosystems; carbon finance will make the construction of otherwise uneconomical systems possible.

A pilot project is underway at Israel’s Gan Yoshia constructed wetland project, where NEL-i and Rplace are pre-selling carbon offset credits to finance project development. NEL-i is building on its previous experience of developing the world’s first constructed wetland carbon offset project.

Michal Wimmer Luria, co-founder and CEO of Rplace, said, “The benefits of constructed wetlands extend far beyond water treatment and GHG reduction. These systems hydrate and restore the landscape, create habitats, and foster strong communities. Youth groups are building support infrastructure around the constructed wetlands at Gan Yoshia, while River Trustees offer guided tours and interpretation. Stakeholder involvement is off the charts!”

David Beaudoin, co-founder and CEO of NEL-i, added, “One of the main challenges in any carbon offset project is to unequivocally demonstrate real carbon reductions. Rplace’s MRV technology does exactly that, with the added benefit of real-time water quality and biodiversity data that allows operators to respond instantly to disruptions. This is a game-changer!”

This partnership brings together key collaborators to build a productive ecosystem, where carbon finance, advanced monitoring, and constructed wetland expertise will work together to deliver high-quality constructed wetland projects for years to come.
